A collection of resources I’ve found useful. I’ll update these as I discover/remember them. Please feel free to reach out with any additions or comments!
Neuroscience Methods
fMRI
- DartBrains: A great resource from Dr. Luke Change at Dartmouth for learning about fMRI analyses.
- Elements of fMRI Analysis: Another fantastic fMRI resource coming from Dartmouth by Dr. Tor Wager. Code, examples, and tutorials on different elements of fMRI data analysis.
- Mumford Brain Stats: A fantastic youtube series of fMRI analyses by Dr. Jeanette Mumford.
- CoSMoMVPA: Code and tutorials for running MVPA in MATLAB
- NiLearn: Great resource for conducting fMRI analyses in python with code, tutorials, and examples
Electrophysiology
- RAVE: A fantastic tool for analysis and visualization of intracranial iEEG data. Created and managed by the Beauchamp Lab here at Penn.
- Python for Neuroscientists: From Drs. Mark Kramer and Uri Eden, another great resource for learning python for electrophysiological data (LFPs and Spikes!).
- WaveClus: Spike sorting algorithm/GUI from Chaure et al.
- Combinato: Another type of spike sorting software from Niediek et al.
- Duplicate Event Removal algorithm: Detect, tag, and remove possibly duplicate spikes identified post spike sorting from Dehnen et al.
Misc Data Processing
- Mike X Cohen Tutorials: This could probably be its own category. Amazing youtube video tutorials on all things relevant for neuroscience data analyses from basic fundamentals to the computations underlying complex timeseries analyses. See also his resources on neuroscience analysis in MATLAB
- Mark Thornton’s Blog: Very informative posts about various social-neuro topics by Dr. Mark Thornton.
Figure Making
- R Charts: Tutorials on making nice plots/figures in R!
- Sleep Scoring Tools [YASA,SleepSEEG]: While manual sleep scoring is probably still the gold standard, here’s a couple of tools that folks have found helpful (though still need a bit of manual validation/correction).
Open Data Resources
- THINGS Intiative: An absolutely massive and incredible resource of stimuli and data of human object processing
- Natural Scenes Dataset: Another incredible human perception resource. Repeated scanning of item-recognition from 8 individuals over the course of a year with a ton of additional data (localizers, rest, diffusion, etc…) all done to a high standard.
Professional Development
- Psych Job Wiki: Website where job opportunities in psychology/neuroscience are posted regularly.
- Nature Careers: Another place to sign up for alerts/search for job opportunities in academia.
- Jobs in Neurotech: A place to search for jobs in the growing neurotech field.
- Example Lab Manuals [Peelle Lab Manual,MemoLab Manual,Aly Lab Manual]: Example lab manuals that set norms/standards and expectations. Can be helpful for fostering an inclusive and positive lab culture. Thanks to these folks (Drs. Jonathon Peelle, Maureen Ritchey, and Mariam Aly) for making their manuals publically available!
Pre-Doctoral Research Opportunities
- Penn’s MindCORE DivE In Program: A funded weekend at Penn where students will get tons of information about graduate school in the mind-sciences (cognitive and clinical psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, etc…), including hands-on writing workshops, mock grad school interviews, and 1-1 mentorship.
- Penn’s MindCORE Summer Fellowship Program: Paid summer research opportunitiy for Penn and non-Penn students conducting mentored research.
Miscellaneous
- Google Scholar + AI: Use AI to help refine your google-scholar search for relevant articles
- Connected Papers: Find related papers based on their citations/references
- The Transmitter: Amazing online resource publishing news and analysis from across the neuroscience community. Love seeing these emails in my inbox.
- Google USE: A cool primer on Google’s Universal Sentence Encoder by Amit Chaudhary. First read that and then try a tutorial on running the model here
